Gandy Animal Hospital is proud to make laparoscopic surgical services available to our pet owners. While in human medicine, we are creating new advances in medicine using minimally invasive techniques and the many positive benefits in human medicine have shown the veterinary community to embrace this new form of medicine. Today, all over the world, many human surgeries are being performed laparoscopically as the new standard of care.
Here at Gandy Animal Hospital, we have utilized this technology since 2005 and many pet owners have chosen to use laparoscopy has the primary application in having their females pets spayed.
Gandy Animal Hospital also provides laparoscopic surgical techniques in obtaining internal biopsies, removing urinary stones, and gastric dilatation volvulus (GDV) prevention.
What is Laparoscopic Surgery?
Laparoscopic surgery is an operation that is performed through small incisions with the aid of a high definition camera and telescope. Since smaller incisions are required for the technique, it is sometimes referred to as “keyhole” surgery. Smaller incisions mean less tissue trauma, greatly reducing pain and speeding recovery. In the case of abdominal surgeries, the entire surgery can be performed through two or three tiny incisions, rather than a large abdominal opening.
Laparoscopic Surgery Provides Profound Benefits
Less pain—less tearing and bruising, especially in the case of spay procedures. Estimated to be 65% less painful than traditional spays.
Improved visibility for the surgeon—camera magnified views of the organs allow for greater surgical precision.
Faster recovery—studies show that pets are 70% more active in the first three days after surgery compared to traditional surgery.
No need for external stitches or irritating protective cones in most cases.
Faster surgical time and your pet can go home the same day—a shorter procedure and having your pet home the same day reduces stress and anxiety for both pet and owner.
Superior method of confirming diagnosis for ailing pets—this less invasive method is especially better suited for pets already frail from cancer or other diseases.
Laparoscopic Surgery and Spays
In addition to being a more humane choice, when laparoscopic methods are used in a spay surgery, only the ovaries are removed. The uterus is left intact. This has been the procedure of choice for decades in Europe and retains most of the health promoting benefits derived from spaying.
Any surgery is a stressful situation and we know that you want the best possible experience for your pet.
